In recent years, progress made regarding the marriage equality movement has persuaded many people to perceive a brighter future for LGBTIQ+ equal rights.

Yet, in the everyday life of LGBTIQ+ people, sunshine is not always guaranteed.

In the 2023 Taiwan LGBTIQ+ Workplace Experience Survey conducted jointly by Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association and Taiwan Equality Campaign, the following observations were made:

  • 68
    %

of the LGBTIQ+ respondents were not able to come out to their work colleagues freely.

  • 33
    %

of the LGBTIQ+ respondents feared that their chances of promotion and development in the workplace could be affected if they came out.

  • 40
    %

of the LGBTIQ+ respondents worried that their interpersonal relationships in the workplace might be affected if they came out.

  • 50
    %

of the respondents reported that their workplace had neither adopted any gender-inclusive measures nor expressed any LGBTIQ+-friendly opinions.

To improve the workplace experience of LGBTIQ+ people in Taiwan and to encourage and foster more businesses to create a more inclusive workplace, making “LGBTIQ+ inclusion” a part of our daily life, in 2023, Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association and Taiwan Equality Campaign jointly developed the Taiwan LGBTIQ+ Inclusive Workplace Index.

By inviting businesses and organizations to complete a self-evaluation questionnaire, the Index aimed to examine these employers’ external and internal measures and initiatives to improve LGBTIQ+ workplace inclusion, as well as the outcomes of these actions. Upon completing the survey, we also provided the participating businesses and organizations a guideline of suggestions, empowering them to further strive for workplace inclusion.
